here are the pictures i have taken over the past week.

harvest on sunday
ernte am sonntag

cherry tomatoes that grew together
cherry tomaten die zusammen gewachsen sind

the last zucchini this year

harvest on monday
ernte am montag

yes, i harvested the largest watermelon this past monday...you'll see what happens next

this watermelon weighed in at 4lbs 9.8 ounces (2kg .092g)...
diese wassermelone wiegte 2kg ,092g (4pfund 9,8oz)...

...and it was NOT ripe. ACK! i was just to eager to harvest it. i saw the yellow spot on the bottom, but i didn't heed other signs that would've told me it was not ripe...for example, usually the stem attaching the watermelon to the vine and the closest leaves start to die when the watermelon turns ripe. that was not the case here. the flesh was just starting to turn red. it was not ripe, but quite edible. it was juicy and sweet, but nowhere as sweet as if it was ripe. it had a LOT of seeds.

4 newly cultivated areas in the left garden
4 kultivierte stellen in linkem garten (sonntag)

plum tomatoes getting ripe (plant looks terrible however)

no more zucchini plants! i am now planting peas, beans and lettuce here.

when i got home yesterday, it was a sweltering 95 degrees (F)! summer has not reached its end here in the san francisco bay area! the weekend should stay in the mid 80s and will be going up again later next week (but you know how the weatherpeople can be about the weather....)

anyways, i picked a few roman candle, mini, spitze and plum tomatoes, a handful of jalapenos, and a lot of green beans. for tonight's dinner i will probably throw something together with the beans.

this weekend will be a nice long 3-day weekend! (yay!) i will have a lot of things to plant. many of the lettuce, beets, soybeans, green beans and peas have sprouted and are showing their first pair of true leaves. and the onion seedlings i started a few weeks back seem old enough to go into the ground. that and pulling weeds, turning the compost pile, planting more seeds, and harvesting should keep me busy. if not, i have correcting homework, tending to birds, and going to a scottish games event with relatives to fill up those gaps. :-) have a good weekend!
:-) schoenes wochenende!

i have taken pictures of the garden and some harvests, but i have not yet had time to sit down and upload them. i will try to get to this tonight when i get home. i will also probably have more harvests to show when i go out there this afternoon. (hopefully)
(hoffentlich)

Monday, August 25, 2008

wow, this weekend went by in a flash! i never got around to taking the camera out with me this weekend (i will try to do this today after i get home) but there has been one really drastic change...

i killed all of my zucchini plants. they are all gone. remember the zucchini forest? it was deforested. yep. no kidding.

that area which held the zuccini plants is now a cleaned up, newly tilled and resupplimented with organic compost - ready for new plantings of peas and beans, which i will do next weekend.

i told you i would do it! i just really didn't like how that powdery mildew growing on the plants. i did a lot of research on it and basically specific strains of powdery mildew only affects specific species of plants. so the stuff growing on my zucchini plants would not harm my new bean seedlings. also the mildew it self does not affect the zucchinis directly. what it would do is if it completely covered my zucchini plant leaves, it would slowly kill the leaves, thereby slow down the growing process of the entire plant, including the zucchinis. but to be on the safe side, i always disinfect veggies (any kind) in a 4 parts very warm water to 1 part vinegar. i soak them for a minute or two and rinse the veggies before either using them or putting them into the fridge.

i also cut back my cucumber plants...at least those parts that looked ragged. under some of the leaves, i spotted tiny creatures that looked like aphids...no wonder some of the leaves look so bad. not sure how long my cucumber plants will be producing, but it won't be for very long.

i weeded the right side of the almond tree (there is a nasty case of crab grass growing there) and planted 2 green bean seedlings there (it gets so bushy, so i am hoping it will shade the ground so much that the crab grass has no chance of taking over that area).

i also directly seeded a few prepared areas in the top garden, around the almond tree, with carrots, pac choi and buttercruch lettuce. not sure how they will do since i cannot really monitor the amount of water they get, but we'll see. i will have to water them every day at least.

i planted 2 more pea plants (both sugar snaps) around the cage near the almond tree, planted a few beet seedlings in the second planted plot in the right garden (that plot is only half full of vegetable plants), and cultivated a few spots in the left garden to take a few bean seedlings next weekend. i never really tilled the left garden as much as the right garden, so the clay in the left area is almost as hard as rock! i don't know how the plants in that area can thrive as much as they do. and when that stuff gets wet, it really gets sloppy. so i have to remember not to water too much on this side (what a LOT of the plants that are planted here tell me). i just hacked away at that hard clay soil, enough to get holes that are 2 feet in diameter and about 6 - 8 inches deep and filled them up with organic compost. i have about 4 spots where i did this.

i also had a pretty good harvest...the last 9 zucchinis, 10 cucumbers, a handful of cherry tomatoes, 5 plum tomatoes, a couple of heirloom tomatoes and 18 green beans! with dinner on saturday, i steamed some green beans with half of the zucchinis and tossed it with some salt, pepper and garlic. yum! talk about eating healthy...now i just have to work in more exercise!

i have also been working on sketching up the layout of my raised beds i want to create on half of our backyard lawn. the part i will be growing on is pretty much dead grass (with the drought upon us, we stopped watering our backyard lawn). most will probably be 4' x 4' x 8" high boxes. i think the most expensive part of this will be filling all the boxes with soil and needed compost and whatnot. i will have about 12 raised beds. my plan is to eventually plant edible perennial plants in the border areas that i am currently planting in, mostly berries, and plant all my annual vegeables in raised beds on the lawn. this will all happen along the course of a few years, of course. now that i think about it, i don't think i will even build out all 12 boxes for next year either. we'll see.

i will get back to you later on some pictures!
ich komme wieder zurueck mit bilder!

Slow Food Nation Victory Garden

as promised, i took pictures of the huge raised vegetable garden growing in front of san francisco's city hall yesterday. this vegetable garden was built on july 1 and harvest day is coming next weekend, between August 29th and September 1st. it is indeed a very beautiful garden! i took a lot of pictures and i couldn't make the decision of what to show and what not, so i'm just showing them ALL. there are 38 of them so just sit back, relax and start scrolling...enjoy! (don't forget that you can click on any picture to get a larger version for your viewing enjoyment).
