a couple of days during the week, i take the train into downtown san francisco and my stop is at civic center. at that stop, just a block up, is city hall. has anyone heard of what is going on in front of san francisco's city hall?

well, a few local farms, victory gardens and slowfoodnation.org teamed up to create a vegetable garden on the grounds in front of san francisco's city hall. how cool is that?! Read the story here.

i just HAD to see this for myself, so i went there and i was really blown away by how wonderful everything was set up. basically they created raised beds by piling sacks filled with something (not sure what) in large circles, filling the bed within those circles with dirt and planted all kinds of vegetables and flowers. They had the classic set up of cucumber growing around the bases of sunflower plants which support the climbing bean vines that grow up its stalk. they had lettuce, kale, swiss chard, brussel sprouts, peppers, tomatoes(!) growing wonderfully and in very artistic displays. it was just beautiful.

i haven't been able to spend much time in my own vegetable garden the last 2 days, and seeing this just satisfied my need to see growing vegetables...not to mention giving me ideas on interplanting of vegetables. beautiful! if any of you are in the area of san francisco's city hall, please do go and see this. everything harvested from this garden will be donated to the san francisco food bank.

next week when i go back to that area, i will make sure to have my camera with me!
